Correspondence #1

When I heard the learned astronomer
When the proofs, the figures were ranged in columns before me,
When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them,
When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture- room,
How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick,
Till rising and gliding out I wandered off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time
Looked up in perfect silence at the stars.

Walt Whitman 1865

Dear Centipede,
Thanks you for your encouragement, dear friend. It is heartening to know that there are others out there who enjoy deep thought on weighty writing. I promise I will not spring on you next time we encounter each other in the long grasses. We who appreciate great art must stick together.
Indeed, the engravings are all my own work. As a pussy of startling longevity I have had much time to perfect my artistic skills. Alas, due to my biological inability to hold a piantbrush, my endeavours in the coloured arts were not well received by the public, and I was forced to abandon them in favour of etchings, engravings, and woodcuts, which my sharp claws can produce in an instant.
